The Met Office have forecast a developing frontal system which is expected to bring a period of persistent and at times heavy rain for Hampshire & Isle of Wight on Friday and the far west of the Thames Valley on Friday and Saturday. Rain is likely to be accompanied by strong and gusty winds. As the rain clears, heavy, possibly thundery showers are likely to follow later on Friday and during Saturday. The Flood Guidance Statement is yellow mainly due to surface water issues.
Warnings Issued: - Yellow Rain Warning (Medium Likelihood of Low Impacts) valid 0010 on Friday 14th November to 1500 on Saturday 15th November 2014.
Headline: Although we will see occasional showers today no major issues are expected until a more active weather system moves east across the Thames Valley, Hampshire and Isle of Wight from Thursday afternoon. This system will lead to a spell of heavy rain on Thursday night which could lead to localised surface water flooding in places, possibly exacerbated by blocked drains due to fallen leaves. Heavy showers will follow from the west on Friday and Saturday.
Next 24-36 hours:We are not expecting any significant issues in the next 24 hours or so but the showers we see today could be heavy at times although moving through fairly quickly. Today’s showers will die out during this evening to leave a dry night and a fine start to Thursday. Cloud will increase from the west during Thursday morning with rain spreading east during the afternoon although generally not too heavy at this stage. We may see a drier interlude during the evening but further, locally heavy rain will spread east overnight before clearing on Friday morning. This rain could lead to a few minor impacts due to surface water flooding especially as it quickly follows on from the wet weather in the last few days. Blocked drains due to leaf fall may help to exacerbate the surface water flooding issues.
The Met Office has issued a Yellow RAIN Warning (Medium Likelihood of Low Impacts) to cover the risk from the rain on Thursday night, when we could see 10-20 mm of rain quite widely, and the heavy showers following from the west on Friday and Saturday when a few locations, mainly in the south, could see 10-15 mm an hour in the heaviest showers.
